Publications

Prevent develops many information products and services. The institute provides information on news and relevant subjects via websites, e-zines and journals and web-based tools. It develops research publications and practical guidelines in the form of checklists and other (electronic) tools. Prevent designs awareness-creating material such as brochures, folders, posters, campaigns and tools. The centre also creates tailor-made products at the request of the customer.

Websites

PreventNet
Www.prevent.be, the website of Prevent, is an important display window. The website gives information on the different products and services of the institute, contains information on the wide domain of well-being at work and gives access to PreventDoc (the library search engine). Certain parts are screened off and only paying subscribers can access them with a user name and password. Furthermore it is also possible to order online, sign up for a course, ask questions and register temporarily.

Safestart
Www.safestart.be is the internet portal for young people and their well-being at work. The website was set up during the European week of Health, Safety and Well-being at Work 2006, which in that year was dedicated to young people. The content of the website is provided by Prevent for the Federal Public Department of Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue. The website is more than a display window for the campaign. News, background information, practical tips, nice reports all have a place on the website.

BeSWIC
Www.beswic.be is the internet portal of the Belgian Knowledge Centre on Well-being at Work. BeSWIC is the Belgian support point of the European network of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. Prevent ensures that the News section is regularly updated and provides the content for a number of specific sections. In 2009 the Ergonomics section was completed.

Electronic newsletters

PreventMail
PreventMail is a daily e-newsletter that informs subscribers of new legislation and newspaper coverage of well-being at work. In addition, the newsletter brings out reports on current affairs and announcements. PreventMail can count on a great deal of interest and proves that electronic reporting is faster and more interactive than paper publications. In 2009 a new design was prepared for PreventMail that has been in use since January 2010.

PreventSelect
PreventSelect gives users an overview of the new literature acquisitions in the documentation centre according to their interest profile.

PreventFlash
PreventFlash is a monthly electronic newsletter for industrial accident insurers, including an overview of literature acquisitions and new legislation.

Printed publications

PreventFocus
PreventFocus is a monthly magazine that looks at current trends. The magazine provides background information, takes an in-depth look at a number of aspects through reports and interviews and gives information on safety matters.

In 2009 a lot of work was done on a new design and a few sections were re-examined. The revamped PreventFocus came out in January 2010. The magazine now provides more practical and concise articles divided into different sections: In practice, News&Research, Tools&Methods, People&Safety, Legislation, On the shop floor, Focus and Dossier. There are also extra and short sections on electronic tools, research and ergonomics.

Each year the editorial team publishes a number of specials. In 2009 PreventFocus went into the subject of education and young employees and examined the policy on older employees.

PreventMemo
PreventMemo is a monthly index card that explains a specific subject on two pages. The subjects dealt with in 2009 were: work at computer screens, prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, operation of the safety and protection at work committee, alcohol policy, chipper, sanding machine, stapler, pick hammer, fire extinguisher and working outdoors.

PreventActua
PreventActua is a two weekly newsletter for safety experts, occupational physicians, ergonomists, chairmen and members of the safety and protection at work committee. Over 8 pages the newsletter provides news and practical information on the wide field of safety, health and well-being work. PreventActua is supported by an editorial committee that provides the contacts on the ground.

Objectif Prévention
"Objectif Prévention" is a monthly magazine for employees. It is the most read Prevent magazine. In addition to safety at work, safety in the home and road safety are also covered.

The articles in the various magazines are available online on www.prevent.be.

Tools

PreventLex
Prevent works together with the publisher UGA on the online application Preventlex, which makes all the legislation on well-being at work accessible. An editorial team with both partners, FPD ELSD, Prebes and PVI, advises on the texts to be included.

The website www.preventlex.be combines the benefits of the internet (up to date, accessibility) with the qualities of a publication (handy keywords, well organised). In addition to legislation, the website also provides references to the literature and address lists of accredited organisations.

In 2009 work was done on a weekly update of the texts to ensure that users always have up-to-date information. The ‘In practice’ section was further expanded with a module on case law and a series of new titles in the ‘Focus on’ series: Focus on the Safety and Protection at Work Committee, Focus on noise, Focus on vibrations and Focus on alcohol.

Awareness-creating instruments

The 2010 campaign
In order to develop an information and awareness policy, companies can call on an extensive collection of posters and campaign resources. The annual campaign package includes a schedule, tips for actions and posters on three subjects.

In 2009 the subjects for the 2010 campaign were developed: Safe maintenance, Alcohol and drugs at work and Eye protection.

The 2009 campaign package (developed in 2008) dealt with the following subjects: Harassment at work, Health and safety, and Fire prevention.

Instructional instruments

PreventStart
Together with the multimedia company, Opikanoba, Prevent developed an e-learning tool on health and safety at work.

This tool enables new employees in the company or employees who want to supplement or refresh their basic knowledge of health and safety at work, to learn at their own pace how to assess the different risks on the shop floor and the appropriate measures to be taken to prevent accidents. The employer can select which of the 11 available modules are relevant: players in the company, working posture, lifting and hoisting, internal transport, electricity, fire and explosion, accidents, order, tidiness and hygiene, work equipment, machines and tools, ladders and scaffolding, hazardous products and safety signs.

Each company can also personalise the tool by adding a logo, emergency numbers, etc. The demo is available on the web address http://prevent.opikanoba.com.

Save your back
Save your back is a practical textbook on the occurrence and prevention of back complaints. The book starts with an overview of the structure and functioning of the back. It then goes more deeply into the causes of back pain. The bulk of the book is dedicated to lifting techniques and working postures to avoid back complaints. Using photos, it explains how you can lift and move objects in a back-friendly manner.

The textbook is a handy guideline for employers who want to train their employees on back-friendly lifting techniques. With many illustrations and practical examples, the book is highly suitable to support such a course. However, ‘Save your back’ is also a practical working instrument for employees. Employees who regularly have to lift things manually will find many examples in the book that can help them save their backs. The chapter on muscle-strengthening exercises can inspire them to also work on the good condition of their back at home.
