Institute for Occupational Safety and Health  Prevent is a multidisciplinary institute which seeks to minimise occupational risks by promoting the quality of working conditions and by improving work organisation. The institute is active in research and supports, advises and informs companies and institutions, as well as workplace-accident insurance companies, external occupational prevention and protection services, professional associations, the social partners, authorities and other players in society.
Quality first
Prevent is ISO 9001 certified. The quality of the products and services is continually evaluated and adjusted if necessary. Firstly by our own experts, but also external specialists, editorial committees and steering committees support the products and services through every stage of their lifecycle.
Reality based
The products and services offered are not only built on a firm basis, but also have an important practical relevance. Customers and partners can also switch to tailor-made solutions. Prevent responds to a maximum to the specific needs of its partners and customers.
Up to date
The most recent information and developments are monitored, interpreted and processed by experts on a daily basis. This information and knowledge is immediately incorporated into the various products and services.
Networks & partnerships
As an institute, Prevent maintains many contacts with networks and partners in Belgium, Luxembourg, Europe and the rest of the world. The Public Affairs team develops action plans for specific target groups and stakeholders. It also communicates with the outside world through newsletters and press releases.

| Courses in health and safety at work in Romania
Prevent is leading an international project named TOMRO (Technical assistance for the interoperability of the occupational health service providers on standard databases) which aims to develop a Romanian network of occupational health and safety services, with the ultimate goal of reintegrating people into the working population. TOMRO is receiving financial support from the Romanian government and the European Community.

Prevent maps the information and knowledge requirements of different target groups and provides specific information via online databases and a documentation centre. The institute also has a Working Life Service Centre and a multimedia centre.

| Monitoring
Central to Prevent's monitoring activities are projects in which measurements are done. On the one hand these are projects in which the measurements themselves are done using certain analytical existing or self-developed instruments. On the other hand these are projects in which existing data collections are used as a basis for the analysis. The monitoring projects are the basis for a Belgian Risk Observatory on Well-being at Work. The aim is to gain a view of the past, present and future with regard to well-being, health and safety at work in order to describe the trends and detect new emerging risks.

| Publications
Prevent develops many information products and services. The institute provides information on news and relevant subjects via websites, e-zines and journals and web-based tools. It develops research publications and practical guidelines in the form of checklists and other (electronic) tools. Prevent designs awareness-creating material such as brochures, folders, posters, campaigns and tools. The centre also creates tailor-made products at the request of the customer.

| Studies and research
The studies and research activities of Prevent primarily relate to the collection of all relevant and current knowledge on occupational risks and the prevention of industrial accidents and work-related health problems in Belgium and abroad. By converting this knowledge into practice, Prevent is working on the improvement of occupational safety and health in a scientifically founded way.

Prevent develops and organises training courses in Dutch and French via the Prevent Academy for Working Life vzw. In the Prevent Academy subjects such as Safety & Security and Health and Environment linked to well-being at work occupy a central position. The range of training includes legally recognised training courses, practice-oriented training, workshops, and company tailor-made training.

Since January 2005 Prevent has been developing official activities in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg via the Luxembourg non-profit association, PreventLux. The articles of association of the association were published in the “mémorial” of 21 February 2005.

| 7th International Film and Multimedia Festival
The International Film and Multimedia Festival, held in Korea from June 30 to July 1, 2008, attracted 115 films and 50 multimedia applications from 25 countries, and brought a wide range of topics, new and old, to the attention of the Juries.

| Managing an ageing workforce - Initiatives and measures at macro level
Our society is continuously faced with the complex and extensive challenges of an ageing population. The pressure to implement durable and successful solutions is rising. Skills and employability of older workers need to be developed, while maintaining their health, motivation and capacities. The symposium, organised during the World Congress on Health and Safety in Korea focused on initiatives and measures on macro level in the public and private sector. The symposium presented some of the initiatives.

| XVIIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work
The World Congress on Safety and Health at Work is the world's largest international event in occupational safety and health. It aims at contributing to the prevention of occupational accidents and the protection of workers' health through the exchange of information, knowledge and experiences on new technologies related to safety at work, on preventing occupational diseases, and on safety and health cooperative projects. The XVIIIth World Congress is organised by ILO, ISSA and KOSHA.
